Morocco by Rail and Grand Taxi: A Two-Week Loop
Tangier, Fes, the Sahara, Marrakech and the Atlantic coast — without renting a car.

Morocco has the best public transport in North Africa and one of the most enjoyable rail networks in the world. The high-speed Al Boraq connects Tangier to Casablanca in just over two hours; from there, the classic ONCF trains thread through Rabat, Meknes, Fes and Marrakech.
Beyond the train network, the grand taxi system — shared Mercedes sedans running fixed routes — fills every gap. They leave when full, not on a schedule, and they cost a euro or two between most towns.
A satisfying two-week loop: Tangier (1), Chefchaouen (2), Fes (3), overnight to Merzouga via Midelt (2), Aït Benhaddou (1), Marrakech (3), Essaouira (2). Return to Casablanca for your flight.
Carry small bills. Always agree the price before getting in. And when a stranger insists the medina is closed today, smile, keep walking, and find the alley on your own.
